The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Wally Diehl - Inducted 1984



Born March 10, 1914, in Mitchell. 1932 Mitchell grad. 1936 SDSU grad. Was a teacher, coach and athletic director in Sioux Falls' public school system for 35 years. He coached one year in Hawarden, Iowa, before joining the Sioux Falls school system in 1937. For 28 years, he ran the Howard Wood-Dakota Relays. At Washington High, he was 120-46 in six years as basketball coach, leading the Warriors to state titles in 1955 and '56. He also was 9-5-2 in two years as football coach. He directed nine NAIA track meets at Howard Wood Field and is a member of the NAIA track Hall of Fame, the first inductee not directly connected with a member school. At SDSU, he was all-conference in football and basketball. At Mitchell, he was all-state in football and basketball, and helped the Kernels to the 1932 state basketball title.
