Kim Templeton - Inducted 2024
A graduate of Miller High School in 1972 and Black Hills State University in 1976, Kim Templeton distinguished himself as an all-state basketball player and helped lead the undefeated Miller boys' basketball team to the 1972 State A title. Despite Miller being the smallest school in Class A at the time, Templeton's leadership propelled them to victory, defeating formidable opponents such as Sioux Falls, Washington, Rapid City, Stevens, and Yankton for the state championship.
During his tenure at BHSU from 1972 to 1976, Templeton continued to excel in basketball, earning honorable mention NAIA All-American recognition twice. His remarkable performance saw him set nine school records, including points scored in a game (45), season (733), and career (2,180), and the most field goals made in one game (19), season (282), and career (880), most free throws in a season (169) and career (420), and highest career free-throw percentage (87.4%). Additionally, Templeton showcased his athletic versatility by lettering in baseball and achieving conference champion status in the javelin throw during the 1976 track & field season.
Following graduation, Templeton's talent extended beyond the court and track & field, as he represented South Dakota as an all-star team member on tours throughout Europe and the Soviet Union in the summer and fall of 1976. He transitioned into coaching, serving as both an assistant and head coach at Rapid City Central, leaving an indelible mark on the local basketball scene. In 1995, he became the Director of Scouting for the Rapid City Thrillers under head coach Eric Musselman. In 1994 and 1995, Templeton was on a team that won the 3-on-3 (over 40) National Championship. Templeton's contributions to the sport have been duly recognized, being inducted into the Miller High School, BHSU Athletic, SDIC, Rapid City Sports, Amateur Basketball, and South Dakota Basketball Halls of Fame.
