The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Doug Eggers - Inducted 2021



Doug Eggers played five seasons in the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts (1954-57) and the Chicago Cardinals (1958).

The 6-foot, 213-pound linebacker was credited with four career pass interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. In 1959 he signed with the Oakland Raiders but decided to remain in Baltimore to manage his new business - The Chesapeake Supply and Equipment Company - until his retirement in 1978.

Eggers is a 1952 graduate of South Dakota State College (SDSU), where he was a standout linebacker with the Jackrabbits. He was a starter on the undefeated 1950 team and was named to the All-North Central Conference team in 1951. He was selected to the Rapid City Journal’s all-time South Dakota college football team in 1969. He was inducted into the SDSU Hall of Fame in 1980.

He played football while serving in the U.S. Army, where he was coached by Al Davis, who was the principal owner and general manager of the Oakland Raiders for 39 years. It was Davis who secured an NFL tryout for Eggers.

He graduated from Wagner High School in 1948, where he was a football, basketball, and track & field star.
