The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Carl B. Hoy - Inducted 1968



Born Oct. 17, 1893, near Huron. 1915 Huron H.S. grad. 1919 USD grad. Came to USD in fall of 1927 as head basketball and assistant football and track coach. Was head track coach from 1931-46. Was athletic director from 1935-56. Was basketball coach for 24 years (1927-49, '52-54), going 167-189. His 1947-48 basketball team defeated No. 1-ranked Bradley in Peoria, Ill. Was well-known for his antics on the bench as a coach. Was named to the Helms Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame in 1965. As an athlete, he earned 10 letters in football, basketball and track at USD. Was an outstanding sprinter (10.1 100, 22.2 220). Passed up his senior basketball season at USD to coach at Vermillion H.S. Coached at Gregory from 1920-26, then coached one year at Platte.
