The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Bob Winter - Inducted 1997



Wessington Springs HS. Yankton College. One of the most successful coaches in state history, Winter won 86 percent of his games (319-53) as coach of the Yankton girls basketball team from 1975-91. Won eight Class A titles (1975, '77-79, '83, '86-88) and was runner-up three times. Also won 12 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles. Was the first South Dakota girls basketball coach to reach 300 wins. Was national girls basketball coach of the year in 1987.

Was the boys basketball coach at Yankton from 1965-74, going 143-63, winning the state title in '74 and finishing second in 1970, '72 and '73. After coaching, he became Yankton's activities director and under his direction Yankton won 29 large school championships. Winter was selected as the 2009 National Athletic Director of the Year and he has been elected to many halls of fame.
